🚨 2025 GMC Sierra 2500HD: Emergency Neutral

The 2025 Sierra 2500HD uses an electronic console-mounted shifter with shift-by-wire technology and an electronic shift lock override.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
  2. If battery has any charge, turn the ignition to ON (push start button without foot on brake)
  3. Locate the shift lock override access - there is a small rectangular cover/cap on the left side of the shifter base assembly
  4. Use a small flathead screwdriver or trim tool to carefully pry off the override access cover
  5. Insert a screwdriver or key into the override slot revealed beneath the cover
  6. Press down firmly on the override mechanism while pulling the shifter button and moving the shifter to Neutral
  7. If completely dead, see no-power notes below

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery on this electronic shifter, the shift-by-wire system will not function. If jump-starting is not possible, the transmission must be placed in Neutral mechanically under the vehicle. Locate the transmission shift linkage on the driver's side of the transmission case. There is a manual shift lever on the transmission - with the vehicle safely raised, rotate this lever to the Neutral position (typically mid-position). This vehicle MUST be towed on a flatbed due to electronic parking brake concerns and potential drivetrain damage.
