🚨 2026 GMC Sierra 2500HD: Emergency Neutral
The 2026 Sierra 2500HD uses an electronic console-mounted shifter with shift-by-wire technology and an electronic shift lock override.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
- If battery has any charge, turn the ignition to ON (push start button without foot on brake)
- Locate the shift lock override access - there is a small rectangular cover/cap on the left side of the shifter base assembly
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or trim tool to carefully pry off the override access cover
- Insert a screwdriver or key into the override slot revealed beneath the cover
- Press down firmly on the override mechanism while pulling the shifter button and moving the shifter to Neutral
- If completely dead, see no-power notes below

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery on this electronic shifter, the shift-by-wire system will not function. If jump-starting is not possible, the transmission must be placed in Neutral mechanically under the vehicle. Locate the transmission shift linkage on the driver's side of the transmission case. There is a manual shift lever on the transmission - with the vehicle safely raised, rotate this lever to the Neutral position (typically mid-position). This vehicle MUST be towed on a flatbed due to electronic parking brake concerns and potential drivetrain damage.
