The procedure
- Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels - this is critical on a heavy-duty truck
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if battery has any charge
- Locate the shift lock release button on the lower right side of the column shifter housing
- Press and hold the release button (or if no button is visible, look for a small slot near the shifter base)
- While pressing the release, pull the column shifter toward you to move it from Park to Neutral
- If no release button or slot is present (some 1990 models had simpler mechanisms), firmly pull the shifter while someone else turns the key to ACC - older mechanical locks sometimes release with key position alone
- Once in Neutral, vehicle can be pushed or towed
