🚨 1992 GMC Sierra 3500: Emergency Neutral

This generation uses a column-mounted shift lever with a mechanical shift lock release that does not require electrical power to operate.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is firmly set and wheels are chocked
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if the battery has any charge (not required but makes the process easier)
  3. Locate the shift lock release button on the lower right side of the steering column, just below and to the right of the shift lever shroud
  4. Press and hold the shift lock release button firmly inward
  5. While holding the release button, move the shift lever toward you and down through the gate to Neutral
  6. Release the shift lock button once the lever is in Neutral position
Shift-lock override location
Lower right side of the steering column shroud, directly below and to the right of the shift lever base - a small circular or rectangular button accessible without tools
With zero electrical power
The shift lock release on this generation is purely mechanical and does not require any electrical power. The ignition does not need to be on. Simply press the release button and shift to Neutral. If the steering wheel is locked, you may need to turn the key to ACC to unlock the steering column, but this does not affect the shift lock mechanism itself.
