🚨 2012 GMC Yukon: Emergency Neutral
The 2012 GMC Yukon uses a traditional column-mounted shifter with a mechanical shift-lock release override.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly set and wheels are chocked.
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining.
- Locate the shift-lock release slot on the top of the column shifter housing, directly beneath the shift lever handle at the 12 o'clock position.
- Remove the small rectangular cover cap over the shift-lock release slot (it may pop off or require gentle prying with a flathead screwdriver).
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver, trim tool, or key into the exposed slot.
- Press down firmly on the release mechanism while simultaneously pulling the shift lever toward you and moving it to Neutral.
- If no electrical power is available, the mechanical override will still function—repeat steps 3-6 without ignition on.
- Verify the vehicle is in Neutral by attempting to push it slightly (with sufficient help and safety precautions).
Shift-lock override location
Top of the column shifter housing, directly beneath the shift lever handle; covered by a small rectangular cap that must be removed.
With zero electrical power
The shift-lock override is fully mechanical and does not require any battery power. Follow the same procedure—the release mechanism will work without ignition power. However, without power the steering wheel will be locked; do not attempt to steer the vehicle.
