🚨 2026 Honda Freed: Emergency Neutral
The 2026 Honda Freed hybrid uses a console-mounted electronic shift-by-wire lever similar to other modern Honda hybrids.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and set the parking brake if functional.
- Locate the shift lock override slot, typically found near the shifter base on the console (look for a small rectangular cap or cover adjacent to the shifter).
- Remove the cap covering the shift lock override slot using a flathead screwdriver or your finger.
- Insert a flathead screwdriver, key, or similar thin tool into the override slot and press down firmly.
- While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if 12V power is available) or simply move the shifter to Neutral.
- If no power is available, continue holding the override while physically moving the shifter to the Neutral position.
- The vehicle can now be moved or towed with the front wheels on the ground in Neutral for short distances only.
Shift-lock override location
Near the shifter base on the center console, typically forward or to the right side of the shifter—look for a small rectangular cover that can be pried off
With zero electrical power
With completely dead 12V battery, you may need to jump-start the 12V system or provide external power to unlock the steering wheel and shift lock. The shift lock override should still function mechanically even without power. The hybrid system does not need to be in READY mode to shift to Neutral using the override.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
HYBRID CRITICAL: The Freed hybrid has a complex drivetrain. For towing distances beyond a few hundred feet, the vehicle MUST be on a flatbed with all wheels off the ground. Extended towing with front wheels down can damage the hybrid transaxle. Do not exceed 35 mph or tow more than 50 miles with wheels on ground even in Neutral.
