🚨 2004 Honda Insight: Emergency Neutral

The first-generation Honda Insight uses a traditional console-mounted automatic transmission shifter with an electronic shift lock mechanism.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground or properly chocked.
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if you have any 12V power available (this may allow the shift lock to release normally with the brake pedal depressed).
  3. If no power is available or the shift lock still won't release, locate the shift lock override slot—it is a small rectangular opening covered by a removable plastic cap on the left side of the shifter base near the console trim.
  4. Use a flathead screwdriver or the mechanical key blade to pry off the plastic cap covering the override slot.
  5. Insert the screwdriver or key fully into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pulling the shifter button and moving the shifter out of Park into Neutral.
  6. Keep the tool pressed into the override slot throughout the shifting motion until the shifter is fully in Neutral.
  7. Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be pushed or loaded onto a flatbed.

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the hybrid system will be completely inactive. You must use the mechanical shift lock override as described. The steering wheel will also be locked unless you turn the key to ACC (which requires minimal battery voltage). If the 12V battery is completely dead, you may need to jump-start or temporarily connect an external 12V source just to unlock the steering column for safe movement.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
The Insight is a hybrid with a high-voltage battery system. If the 12V auxiliary battery is dead, the hybrid system will not activate, but this does not prevent mechanical override of the shifter. CRITICAL: If the vehicle must be towed, use a flatbed only. The Insight's IMA (Integrated Motor Assist) system shares components with the transmission, and flat-towing with any wheels on the ground can cause severe damage to the hybrid drivetrain. All four wheels must be off the ground during transport.
