🚨 2010 Honda Insight: Emergency Neutral

The 2010 second-generation Insight uses a console-mounted electronic shifter with shift-by-wire technology and an electronic shift interlock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is fully engaged and wheels are chocked.
  2. Attempt to turn the ignition to ON mode (push the start button twice without pressing the brake pedal) to provide power to the shifter electronics.
  3. Press the brake pedal and move the shifter to N if power is available.
  4. If no power is available or the shifter will not move, locate the shift lock override: on the console near the shifter base, look for a small rectangular cap or slot, typically on the right side of the shifter.
  5. Pry off the small plastic cap using a flathead screwdriver.
  6. Insert a flathead screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly.
  7. While holding the override down, move the shifter to N. You may need to simultaneously turn the ignition to ON if any residual power exists.
  8. If completely dead, the override alone should release the shifter mechanism to allow movement to N.
  9. Once in N, the vehicle can be moved or towed on a flatbed.

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the shift-by-wire system is completely inactive. The shift lock override provides a mechanical bypass to move the shifter to N position. However, even in N, the transmission may not fully disengage without power. Flatbed towing with all wheels off the ground is strongly recommended.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
The 2010 Insight is a full hybrid with an integrated electric motor. Never flat-tow this vehicle with the drive wheels on the ground, even in N, as the motor is directly coupled to the transmission and will generate voltage, potentially damaging the hybrid system. Always use a flatbed or tow with the front wheels off the ground using a wheel-lift. Disconnect the 12V battery if the vehicle must remain in N for an extended period.
