🚨 2025 Honda Passport: Emergency Neutral

The 2025 Passport uses an electronic shift-by-wire console-mounted lever with a traditional PRNDSL gate pattern.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and set the parking brake firmly.
  2. Turn the ignition to ON (push the start button twice without pressing the brake pedal) to provide power to the shift interlock system.
  3. Press and hold the brake pedal firmly.
  4. Press the shift-lock release button (a small plastic cap/button near the base of the shifter on the left side) using a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool to depress the mechanical override.
  5. While holding the override button down and keeping the brake pressed, move the shifter from Park to Neutral.
  6. If the battery is completely dead and the ignition cannot be powered on, you must jump-start the 12V battery or connect an external power source to enable the electronic shifter.
  7. Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be moved or loaded onto a flatbed.

With zero electrical power
The electronic shifter requires 12V power to operate. With zero power, you must jump-start the battery or connect a portable jump pack to at least the ON position before the shift-lock override will function. The mechanical override only bypasses the brake interlock, not the electronic shift system itself.
