🚨 1992 Honda Prelude: Emergency Neutral

The 1992 Prelude (fourth generation) uses a mechanical console-mounted shifter with a traditional PRND gate and cable linkage to the transmission.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and set the parking brake firmly.
  2. Locate the shift-lock override mechanism near the shifter base; look for a small removable plastic cap or access slot on the left or right side of the shifter console trim.
  3. Remove the plastic cap using a flathead screwdriver or your fingernail.
  4. Insert a flathead screwdriver or the metal key into the slot and press down on the release tab.
  5. While holding the override mechanism down, move the shifter from Park to Neutral without pressing the brake pedal.
  6. The vehicle can now be pushed or loaded onto a flatbed.
Shift-lock override location
Small slot with removable cap near the shifter base on the console; typically on the right side of the shifter, though exact location varies by trim
With zero electrical power
This is a mechanical cable-shifted transmission, so the shift-lock override works with zero electrical power. You do not need to turn on the ignition or have any battery power to use the mechanical override and shift into Neutral.
