⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and set the parking brake firmly.
- Locate the shift-lock override mechanism near the shifter base; look for a small removable plastic cap or access slot on the left or right side of the shifter console trim.
- Remove the plastic cap using a flathead screwdriver or your fingernail.
- Insert a flathead screwdriver or the metal key into the slot and press down on the release tab.
- While holding the override mechanism down, move the shifter from Park to Neutral without pressing the brake pedal.
- The vehicle can now be pushed or loaded onto a flatbed.
Shift-lock override location
Small slot with removable cap near the shifter base on the console; typically on the right side of the shifter, though exact location varies by trim
With zero electrical power
This is a mechanical cable-shifted transmission, so the shift-lock override works with zero electrical power. You do not need to turn on the ignition or have any battery power to use the mechanical override and shift into Neutral.
