🚨 2026 Honda Step WGN: Emergency Neutral

The 2026 Honda Step WGN uses a traditional console-mounted P-R-N-D shift lever with electronic shift lock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and set the parking brake firmly.
  2. Turn the ignition to ON (or press the START button twice without pressing the brake pedal) if 12V power is available.
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot—it is typically a small covered opening near the base of the shifter console, usually on the right side or front edge of the shifter base.
  4. Remove the cap or cover over the override slot using a flat tool or your fingernail.
  5. Insert a small flat-blade screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the slot and press down firmly.
  6. While holding the override down, press the shifter button and move the shifter from P to N.
  7. Release the override tool and replace the cover.
  8. The vehicle can now be rolled or towed in neutral.
Shift-lock override location
Small covered slot near the shifter base on the console, typically to the right or front of the shifter—check around the perimeter of the shifter boot area for a removable cap
With zero electrical power
With no 12V power, the shift lock override is mechanical and will still function. Follow the override procedure with the tool; no ignition power is required to release the shifter mechanically. Ensure parking brake is set before beginning.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
This hybrid minivan should NOT be towed with drive wheels on the ground for extended distances. The hybrid transaxle contains electric motors that can be damaged by unpowered rotation. Use a flatbed or dolly under the front wheels. For very short distances (loading onto flatbed), neutral is acceptable.
