⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Set the parking brake and chock the wheels.
- Turn the ignition to the ON or ACC position if battery power is available.
- Locate the shift lock override: on the column shifter housing, look for a small access hole or slot typically on the lower right side of the shifter shroud, near where the shifter lever enters the column.
- Remove any small cover or cap if present.
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver, pen, or similar tool into the override access hole.
- While pressing the tool into the override, press the brake pedal (if power available) and pull the shifter lever toward you to move it out of Park into Neutral.
- Hold the override depressed until the shifter is fully in Neutral.

With zero electrical power
With no electrical power, the ignition cannot be turned to ON. The shift lock override is mechanical and should still release the shifter. Insert the tool into the override slot and apply firm pressure while pulling the shifter. If resistance is excessive, a small amount of 12V power (jump pack or jumper cables) may help energize the solenoid momentarily.
