🚨 2009 Hummer H2: Emergency Neutral

The 2009 H2 uses a traditional column-mounted shifter with a mechanical shift lock release.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Apply the parking brake firmly and ensure the vehicle is on level ground or properly chocked.
  2. Turn the ignition to the ACC or ON position if battery power is available (if not, see no-power notes).
  3. Locate the shift lock release slot—it is a small rectangular opening on the right side of the shifter housing, near where the column meets the dash.
  4. Remove the plastic cap covering the shift lock release slot (it may pull straight out or pry gently with a flat tool).
  5. Insert a small flat-blade screwdriver or similar tool into the release slot and press firmly.
  6. While holding the tool down in the release slot, press the shifter button and move the shifter to Neutral.
  7. If the vehicle still will not shift, ensure you are pressing the override deep enough and that the button on the shifter is fully depressed.
  8. Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be moved or towed (do not tow AWD models with rear wheels down more than a few feet—use flatbed).

With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the mechanical shift lock override is still functional. The override release is purely mechanical and does not require battery power. You can manually insert a tool into the override slot and shift to Neutral. However, without power, the steering wheel will be locked—apply extra caution and use a flatbed tow truck.
