⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Apply the parking brake firmly and ensure the vehicle is on level ground or properly chocked.
- Turn the ignition to the ACC or ON position if battery power is available (if not, see no-power notes).
- Locate the shift lock release—it is a small covered slot on the lower right side of the column shifter housing, close to where the column meets the lower dash panel.
- Use a small flat tool to pry off or remove the plastic cover over the shift lock release slot.
- Insert a small flat-blade screwdriver or similar rigid tool into the release slot and press down firmly.
- While holding the release tool down, press the shifter release button and move the shifter to Neutral.
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be moved. If towing is needed, use a flatbed or dolly for AWD models (do not flat-tow with rear wheels down).

With zero electrical power
The shift lock override is a mechanical system and will work with zero electrical power. Insert the tool into the override slot and shift to Neutral. Note that without power, the steering wheel will remain locked and power steering will not function—use extreme caution and strongly prefer a flatbed tow truck.
