The procedure
- Apply the parking brake firmly and ensure the vehicle is on level ground or properly chocked.
- Turn the ignition to the ACC or ON position if battery power is available (if not, see no-power notes).
- Locate the shift lock override access point—it is a small rectangular slot or covered opening typically located to the left or right of the shifter base, near the console trim.
- Remove any plastic cover over the override slot (it may snap off or need gentle prying).
- Insert a small flat-blade screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly.
- While holding the override tool in place, press the shifter release button and move the shifter to Neutral.
- If the shifter still does not release, ensure the tool is fully inserted and the shifter button is completely depressed.
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be moved or towed on a flatbed.
