🚨 2005 Hyundai Accent: Emergency Neutral

The 2005 Accent with CVT uses a console-mounted floor shifter with an electronic shift lock system and mechanical override.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Apply the parking brake firmly and ensure the vehicle is on level ground or properly chocked.
  2. Turn the ignition to the ACC or ON position if battery power is available (if not, see no-power notes).
  3. Locate the shift lock override access point—it is a small rectangular slot or covered opening typically located to the left or right of the shifter base, near the console trim.
  4. Remove any plastic cover over the override slot (it may snap off or need gentle prying).
  5. Insert a small flat-blade screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly.
  6. While holding the override tool in place, press the shifter release button and move the shifter to Neutral.
  7. If the shifter still does not release, ensure the tool is fully inserted and the shifter button is completely depressed.
  8. Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be moved or towed on a flatbed.

With zero electrical power
With no electrical power, the mechanical shift lock override still functions. Insert the override tool and manually shift to Neutral. Be aware that without power, the steering wheel will be locked—use a flatbed tow truck for safety. The CVT transmission should not be towed with the drive wheels on the ground for any significant distance.
