⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and wheels are chocked
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
- Locate the shift lock override slot - it is a small rectangular opening with a cap cover on the left side of the shifter base, near the driver's side of the shift gate
- Use a flat-head screwdriver or similar tool to pry off the small cap covering the override slot
- Insert the screwdriver or a key into the override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if battery has power) and move the shifter to Neutral
- If battery is completely dead, continue holding the override down while physically moving the shifter - it should release with firm downward pressure on the override

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, you cannot use the ignition. Apply firm downward pressure on the shift lock override slot (after removing cap) while simultaneously moving the shifter to Neutral. The mechanical override will physically release the shifter lock mechanism without requiring any electrical power.
