🚨 2012 Hyundai Accent: Emergency Neutral

The 2012 Hyundai Accent (fifth generation redesign) uses a floor-mounted console shifter with electronic shift lock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and wheels are chocked
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
  3. Locate the shift lock override - look for a small rectangular slot with a cap on the left side of the shifter base, toward the front or driver's side
  4. Remove the cap covering the override slot using your finger or a flat-head screwdriver
  5. Insert a screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly
  6. While holding the override depressed, press the brake pedal (if power available) and move the shifter to Neutral
  7. If battery is completely dead, maintain downward pressure on the override while moving the shifter - mechanical release should allow movement to Neutral
Shift-lock override location
Left side of the shifter base near the driver's side, small rectangular slot with removable cap - typically located forward of the shifter button area
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the ignition cannot be turned on. Insert tool into the shift lock override slot (after removing cap) and apply firm downward pressure while simultaneously attempting to move the shifter to Neutral. The mechanical override bypasses the electronic shift lock without requiring power.
