⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure wheels are chocked - note that this hybrid has an electronic parking brake that may not hold if 12V power is completely dead
- If the 12V battery has any charge, press the brake pedal and push the START button twice (without foot on brake first time) to reach ON mode - do not start the hybrid system
- With power in ON mode, press and hold the brake pedal firmly, then move the shifter to Neutral
- If the shift lock still will not release, locate the shift lock override access - look for a small covered slot on the left front side of the shifter base console
- Remove the small cap or cover and insert a screwdriver or key into the override slot
- Press down on the override while holding the brake and move the shifter to Neutral
- If successful in reaching Neutral with the hybrid system OFF, the vehicle is ready for flatbed towing ONLY

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the push-button start will not function and the electronic parking brake may not hold. Access the shift lock override (left side of shifter base), press down firmly with a tool while simultaneously attempting to move the shifter to Neutral. The mechanical override should work without power, but be aware the electronic parking brake may release. CRITICAL: Even in Neutral, this hybrid must be towed on a flatbed - the electric motor is connected to the drive wheels and will generate dangerous voltage if wheels rotate during towing.

MANDATORY FLATBED TOWING ONLY. The Elantra Hybrid has an electric motor mechanically connected to the front wheels. If the vehicle is towed with drive wheels on the ground (even in Neutral), the rotating wheels will force the motor to generate high voltage electricity, which can severely damage the hybrid system and create fire risk. Always use flatbed towing for any hybrid vehicle movement when the hybrid system cannot be powered on properly.
