The procedure
- Ensure wheels are chocked - the electronic parking brake may not hold if 12V power is completely dead
- If the 12V battery has any charge, press the brake pedal and push the START button twice (without foot on brake first time) to reach ON mode - do not start the hybrid system
- With power in ON mode, press and hold the brake pedal firmly, then move the shifter to Neutral
- If the shift lock will not release, locate the shift lock override access - look for a small covered slot on the left front side of the shifter base console
- Remove the small cap or cover and insert a screwdriver or key into the override slot
- Press down firmly on the override while holding the brake and move the shifter to Neutral
- If successful in reaching Neutral with the hybrid system OFF, the vehicle is ready for flatbed towing ONLY

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the push-button start will not function and the electronic parking brake may not engage or hold. Access the shift lock override (left side of shifter base under cap), insert a tool and press down firmly while simultaneously attempting to move the shifter to Neutral. The mechanical override should function without electrical power, but electronic parking brake will not hold - wheel chocks are essential. CRITICAL: Even in Neutral, this hybrid MUST be towed on a flatbed - the electric motor is mechanically connected to the drive wheels.

MANDATORY FLATBED TOWING ONLY. The Elantra Hybrid has an electric motor mechanically coupled to the front wheels. Towing with drive wheels on the ground (even in Neutral) will force the motor to spin and generate dangerous high voltage, causing severe damage to the hybrid system and potential fire hazard. Only flatbed towing is safe for this vehicle when the hybrid system is not operational.
