🚨 2023 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid: Emergency Neutral

The 2023 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid uses an electronic shift-by-wire console shifter with push-button start and electronic parking brake.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure wheels are chocked - the electronic parking brake may not function if 12V power is completely dead
  2. If the 12V battery has any charge, press the brake pedal and push the START button twice (without foot on brake first time) to reach ON mode - do not start the hybrid system
  3. With power in ON mode, press and hold the brake pedal firmly, then move the shifter to Neutral
  4. If the shift lock will not release, locate the shift lock override access - look for a small covered slot on the left front side of the shifter base console
  5. Remove the small cap or cover and insert a screwdriver or key into the override slot
  6. Press down firmly on the override while holding the brake and move the shifter to Neutral
  7. If successful in reaching Neutral with the hybrid system OFF, the vehicle is ready for flatbed towing ONLY
Shift-lock override location
Left front side of the shifter base console, small covered slot or rectangular opening - typically requires removing a small trim cap
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the push-button start will not function and the electronic parking brake will not hold. Access the shift lock override (left side of shifter base under cap), insert a tool and press down firmly while simultaneously moving the shifter to Neutral. The mechanical override should function without electrical power, but wheel chocks are critical since the electronic parking brake will not engage. CRITICAL: This hybrid MUST be towed on a flatbed only - never with drive wheels on the ground.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
MANDATORY FLATBED TOWING ONLY. The Elantra Hybrid has an electric motor mechanically connected to the front wheels. If the vehicle is towed with drive wheels touching the ground (even in Neutral), the wheels will force the motor to rotate and generate dangerous high voltage electricity. This will cause catastrophic damage to the hybrid system and create serious fire risk. Always use flatbed towing for this vehicle when the hybrid system cannot be properly powered on.
