🚨 2025 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid: Emergency Neutral
The 2025 Elantra Hybrid uses a conventional console-mounted shifter lever with electronic shift lock (P-R-N-D).

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and the parking brake is engaged.
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if 12V power is available (press START button twice without brake pedal).
- Locate the shift lock override slot—it is a small rectangular opening with a cover cap on the left side of the shifter base, near the P position.
- Use a flathead screwdriver or key to pry off the small plastic cover cap.
- Insert a flathead screwdriver, key, or similar rigid tool into the override slot and press down firmly.
- While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if power available) and move the shifter from P to N.
- If the shifter still will not move, ensure you are pressing the override fully—there is a mechanical tab that must be depressed.

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the shift lock override will still function mechanically. Use the override slot as described, and manually move the shifter to N without needing the brake pedal or ignition on. The hybrid system does NOT need to be 'Ready' to shift to neutral mechanically.

HYBRID VEHICLE WARNING: The Elantra Hybrid can roll freely in N even when powered off. For flatbed towing, neutral is acceptable for SHORT distances at low speed to load onto flatbed. For transport or any distance, verify tow mode procedures in owner's manual or tow with drive wheels OFF the ground. Do NOT tow in P with drive wheels on ground—transmission damage will occur.
