🚨 2025 Hyundai Elantra N: Emergency Neutral

The 2025 Elantra N uses a traditional electronic console-mounted shifter with an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT) and electronic shift lock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and set the parking brake firmly
  2. Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery power is available
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot: it is a small covered access hole on the console near the shifter base, typically to the right or front of the shifter lever
  4. Use a flathead screwdriver or similar tool to pry off the small rubber or plastic cap covering the override slot
  5. Insert a flathead screwdriver, key, or similar rigid tool into the override slot and push down firmly while simultaneously pressing the brake pedal (if power available) and moving the shifter to Neutral
  6. If successful, the shifter will release from Park and can be moved to Neutral
  7. Keep the tool depressed in the override slot until the shifter is fully in Neutral position
Shift-lock override location
Small covered slot on the shifter console, typically near the base of the shifter lever on the right or front side; exact position may vary slightly but is within 2 inches of the shifter base
With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the electronic shifter may not release even with the override. If override does not work with zero power, the vehicle cannot be shifted and must be loaded onto a flatbed with wheels off the ground or dragged onto the flatbed using wheel dollies. Do not attempt to tow with drive wheels on the ground.
