The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and set the parking brake firmly
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery power is available
- Locate the shift lock override slot: it is a small covered access hole on the console near the shifter base, typically to the right or front of the shifter lever
- Use a flathead screwdriver or similar tool to pry off the small rubber or plastic cap covering the override slot
- Insert a flathead screwdriver, key, or similar rigid tool into the override slot and push down firmly while simultaneously pressing the brake pedal (if power available) and moving the shifter to Neutral
- If successful, the shifter will release from Park and can be moved to Neutral
- Keep the tool depressed in the override slot until the shifter is fully in Neutral position
