🚨 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 5: Emergency Neutral

The 2026 Ioniq 5 is expected to use a column-mounted electronic stalk-style gear selector with P-R-N-D positions, consistent with previous model years.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake if functional.
  2. Insert the key fob into the vehicle and press the START button without pressing the brake pedal to put the vehicle in ACC or ON mode (requires 12V battery power).
  3. Press and hold the brake pedal.
  4. Move the gear selector stalk to N (Neutral) position by pulling it toward you once from Park.
  5. If the 12V battery is completely dead, you must jump-start the 12V battery (likely located under the rear cargo area) or connect an external 12V power source to gain electrical power—the electronic shifter will not function without 12V power.
  6. Once in Neutral with power restored, the vehicle can be pushed or rolled short distances.
  7. For towing or flatbed loading, consult the owner's manual for the proper tow mode procedure, which may require activating a service mode through the infotainment system.
With zero electrical power
The Ioniq 5 has no mechanical shift-lock override because it uses an electronic gear selector. You MUST provide 12V power to the vehicle (jump-start the 12V auxiliary battery, likely located under the rear cargo floor, or connect a portable jump starter) to operate the shifter. Without 12V power, the shifter is completely inoperable and the vehicle cannot be shifted into Neutral by manual override.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: The Ioniq 5 must be transported on a flatbed truck for any distance beyond immediate repositioning. Do NOT tow with any wheels on the ground—the electric motor remains mechanically connected to the wheels even in Neutral, and towing will cause severe damage to the drive system and generate dangerous voltages. For flatbed loading, if you cannot get the vehicle into Neutral due to complete power loss, the vehicle must be dragged onto the flatbed with the front wheels on dollies or skates after jump-starting the 12V system.
