🚨 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 6: Emergency Neutral

The 2026 Ioniq 6 uses a column-mounted electronic shift-by-wire stalk on the right side of the steering column.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake if functional.
  2. Locate the small rectangular shift-lock override slot on the right side of the center console, near the cupholders, typically covered by a small removable cap.
  3. Use a flathead screwdriver or similar tool to gently pry off the override cap.
  4. Insert the physical key blade (from the key fob) or a flathead screwdriver into the override slot and press down firmly while attempting to move the shift stalk to Neutral.
  5. If the 12V battery is completely dead, you may need to provide jump power or a 12V power source to the vehicle first—the shift-by-wire system requires minimal electrical power to release.
  6. Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be moved. Note that without power, the electronic parking brake may remain engaged.
  7. If the electronic parking brake (EPB) cannot be released due to no power, you must use a flatbed tow truck—do not attempt to drag the vehicle with the EPB engaged.

With zero electrical power
The shift-by-wire system requires at least minimal 12V power to operate. With a completely dead 12V battery, you must either jump-start the 12V system or connect an external 12V power source to the vehicle before the shifter will respond to the override. The electronic parking brake also requires power to release—if the 12V battery is completely dead and cannot be recharged, flatbed towing is mandatory.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: The Ioniq 6 is a rear-wheel-drive EV (AWD on some trims). If the electronic parking brake cannot be released, the vehicle MUST be transported on a flatbed with all wheels off the ground. Never tow with rear wheels on the ground when the motor is engaged or parking brake is stuck. Even in Neutral with power, follow Hyundai's towing guidelines—extended towing with any wheels on the ground can damage the electric drivetrain.
