🚨 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 9: Emergency Neutral
The 2026 Ioniq 9 is expected to use a column-mounted electronic shift-by-wire stalk similar to other Hyundai E-GMP platform EVs.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake if functional.
- Look for a shift-lock override slot, likely located on the center console area, potentially near the cupholders or under a removable panel—consult the owner's manual for exact location as this is a new model.
- Use a flathead screwdriver or similar tool to remove any protective cap covering the override slot.
- Insert the physical key blade (from the key fob) or a flathead screwdriver into the override slot and press down firmly while attempting to move the shift stalk to Neutral.
- If the 12V battery is completely dead, you may need to provide jump power or a 12V power source to the vehicle first—the shift-by-wire system requires minimal electrical power to release.
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be moved. Note that without power, the electronic parking brake may remain engaged.
- If the electronic parking brake (EPB) cannot be released due to no power, you must use a flatbed tow truck—do not attempt to drag the vehicle with the EPB engaged.
Shift-lock override location
Expected to be on the center console, but exact location not yet confirmed for this new 2026 model—refer to owner's manual
With zero electrical power
The shift-by-wire system requires at least minimal 12V power to operate. With a completely dead 12V battery, you must either jump-start the 12V system or connect an external 12V power source to the vehicle before the shifter will respond to the override. The electronic parking brake also requires power to release—if the 12V battery is completely dead and cannot be recharged, flatbed towing is mandatory.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: The Ioniq 9 is a large three-row EV SUV built on Hyundai's E-GMP platform, available in RWD and AWD configurations. If the electronic parking brake cannot be released, the vehicle MUST be transported on a flatbed with all wheels off the ground. Never tow with any wheels on the ground when the motor is engaged or parking brake is stuck. Even in Neutral with power, follow Hyundai's towing guidelines—the Ioniq 9's size and weight make proper flatbed transport especially critical to avoid drivetrain damage.
