🚨 2019 Hyundai Ioniq Electric: Emergency Neutral

The 2019 Ioniq Electric uses an electronic push-button shift-by-wire system with P, R, N, D buttons located on the center console.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Turn off the vehicle completely and remove the key fob from the cabin
  2. Locate the shift lock override access—there is a small rectangular cap on the lower front face of the push-button shifter assembly, below the P button
  3. Use a flathead screwdriver or trim tool to carefully pry off the shift lock override cap
  4. Insert a flathead screwdriver or similar tool into the exposed override slot and press downward while simultaneously pressing the N button
  5. The transmission should release into Neutral—if the 12V battery has any residual charge, the shifter buttons may illuminate briefly when N engages
  6. If the override does not work due to complete electrical failure, you will need to use the manual tow mode procedure

With zero electrical power
With complete 12V battery failure, the electronic shift-by-wire system may not respond even with the override. In this case, the vehicle must be placed in tow mode: ensure the vehicle is OFF, then the rear wheels can be lifted or the vehicle placed on a flatbed. Do NOT attempt to tow with front wheels on the ground.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: The Ioniq Electric must be transported on a flatbed or with the drive wheels (front) OFF the ground. Towing with drive wheels on the ground will cause severe damage to the electric drive system. The 12V battery powers the shift-by-wire system; if completely dead, jump-starting the 12V battery may be necessary to engage Neutral electronically.
