⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and chocked before proceeding.
- Attempt to turn on the vehicle using the START button with your foot off the brake pedal - this may give you accessory power.
- If you get accessory power, press and hold the brake pedal, then press the N (Neutral) button.
- If you have no power at all, locate the shift lock override access - look for a small rectangular cover or slot near the base of the push-button shifter assembly on the console.
- Use a small flat-blade screwdriver or similar tool to carefully pry off the override cover.
- Insert the screwdriver into the override slot and press down while attempting to press the N button (if you have any accessory power) or while physically checking if the shifter releases.
- With the override engaged, the transmission should mechanically release into neutral.
- If the vehicle still will not release or you cannot locate the override, contact Hyundai roadside assistance or prepare for flatbed towing only.

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the electronic shifter will not function normally. You must use the mechanical shift lock override slot near the shifter base. Note that even with the override, the transmission may not fully disengage without any power - flatbed towing is strongly recommended.
