🚨 2019 Hyundai Ioniq Plug-in Hybrid: Emergency Neutral
The 2019 Ioniq Plug-in Hybrid uses a traditional console-mounted shift lever with electronic shift-lock controlled by the brake interlock system.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and chocked before proceeding.
- Turn the ignition to ON or ACC position if possible (press START button without brake pedal).
- If you have power, press and hold the brake pedal firmly, then move the shift lever from Park to Neutral.
- If the shifter will not move (failed brake switch or no power), locate the shift lock override release.
- Look for a small rectangular or square cover cap on the console near the shifter base, typically on the left side or in front of the shifter.
- Use a small flat-blade screwdriver to carefully pry off the override cover cap.
- Insert the screwdriver into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pulling the shift lever toward you and moving it to Neutral.
- Keep the override depressed until the shifter is fully in Neutral position.
- If still unable to shift, verify the vehicle is in ACC/ON mode or jump the 12V battery for temporary power.

With zero electrical power
With completely dead 12V battery, the electronic shift lock will not release without using the mechanical override. Even with the override, you may need to jump-start the 12V battery to get minimal accessory power for full shifter release. The hybrid system does not need to be 'ready' but the 12V system must have some voltage.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
HYBRID WARNING: While this vehicle has a conventional transmission and CAN be flat-towed short distances in neutral, the hybrid system should be in tow mode if possible. With power available: shift to Neutral, turn OFF the vehicle, then it's safe for towing. For flatbed loading or very short rolls (under 30 feet), neutral is sufficient. For any tow over 1 mile, flatbed is strongly recommended to avoid potential hybrid system damage.
