⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and apply the parking brake firmly
- If 12V battery power is available, turn the ignition to ON (do not press brake; Ready mode is not needed)
- Press and hold the Neutral (N) button for approximately 3 seconds until the transmission engages Neutral
- If no 12V power is available, the shift-by-wire system will not function and the transmission remains locked in Park
- With no power, you must jump-start the 12V battery or connect an external 12V power source to the battery to energize the shift-by-wire system
- Once 12V power is restored, turn ignition to ON and press the N button to shift to Neutral
- For flatbed towing without power, the vehicle must be loaded with wheels on dollies or with the drive wheels off the ground
With zero electrical power
The Ioniq's shift-by-wire system requires 12V power to operate; there is no mechanical override. You must restore 12V power via jump-starting or external battery connection to shift out of Park. If 12V power cannot be restored, flatbed tow with drive wheels off the ground or use wheel dollies.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
HYBRID CRITICAL: The Ioniq Hybrid uses a dual-clutch transmission that can be damaged by flat-towing. Even in Neutral with 12V power, do NOT flat-tow this vehicle with all four wheels on the ground for any distance. Use a flatbed or tow with the front wheels OFF the ground. The high-voltage system does not need to be in Ready mode to shift to Neutral; 12V power to the shifter module is sufficient.
