🚨 2022 Hyundai Ioniq: Emergency Neutral
The 2022 Ioniq Hybrid uses an electronic push-button shift-by-wire system with P, R, N, D buttons arranged vertically on the center console.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and the parking brake is firmly engaged
- Locate the 12V battery (in the trunk under the cargo floor on the left side) and connect a jump starter or donor vehicle to provide electrical power
- With 12V power restored, press and hold the brake pedal
- Press the ENGINE START/STOP button twice without pressing the brake to enter ACC mode (instrument cluster will illuminate)
- While holding the brake pedal, press the N (Neutral) button on the shift panel
- The transmission will engage Neutral and you can release the brake
- If you need to move the vehicle without any electrical power, you must use a flatbed tow truck or wheel dollies - this shift-by-wire system has no mechanical override and cannot be shifted without 12V power
With zero electrical power
The Ioniq Hybrid's electronic shifter REQUIRES 12V power to function - there is no mechanical shift lock override button. Without any electrical power, the transmission cannot be shifted out of Park. The vehicle must be loaded onto a flatbed with the front wheels OFF the ground, or use wheel dollies under the front wheels if being winched onto a flatbed. Do NOT tow with front wheels on the ground.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
The Ioniq Hybrid has a high-voltage battery system. If the high-voltage system is intact and the 12V battery is good, the hybrid system may enable when shifted to Neutral - this is normal. For flatbed transport: place in Neutral if possible (with 12V power), but if zero power exists, load with front wheels raised. Never tow with front wheels on ground as the motor/generator is mechanically coupled to the wheels and will generate uncontrolled voltage.
