🚨 2019 Hyundai Nexo: Emergency Neutral
The 2019 Nexo uses an electronic push-button shift-by-wire system with P, R, N, D buttons located on the center console.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and set the parking brake if possible.
- Attempt to power on the vehicle by pressing the Power button—the Nexo's shifter requires electrical power from the high-voltage battery system and 12V auxiliary battery.
- If the 12V auxiliary battery is dead but the hydrogen fuel cell system is intact, you may be able to jump-start the 12V system to restore shifter function.
- If power is available and the brake light switch is faulty, press the brake pedal firmly and press the 'N' button to select Neutral.
- If there is absolutely no electrical power (both 12V and high-voltage systems dead), the push-button shifter will NOT operate—the transmission will remain locked in Park.
- With no power, the vehicle MUST be loaded onto a flatbed tow truck; do NOT tow with any wheels on the ground.
- The Nexo's hydrogen fuel cell drivetrain and electric motor require the vehicle to be in a specific tow mode or on a flatbed to prevent damage to the electric drive system.
- DO NOT attempt to push or drag the vehicle with the drive wheels on the ground—this can cause severe damage to the electric motor and inverter.
Shift-lock override location
None accessible from the cabin. The electronic push-button shifter has no mechanical shift lock override slot available to the user.
With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power in both the 12V auxiliary battery and the fuel cell system, the Nexo cannot be shifted out of Park from inside the cabin. The only option is to jump-start the 12V battery to restore minimal electrical function, then shift to Neutral. If jump-starting is not possible, the vehicle must be loaded onto a flatbed with all wheels off the ground. There is no cabin-accessible mechanical override for the Park lock.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: The Nexo is a hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle. NEVER tow it with the drive wheels on the ground, even in Neutral, as the electric motor will back-drive and can be severely damaged. Additionally, the high-voltage fuel cell system presents unique safety concerns—ensure the vehicle is de-energized before any undercarriage work. Always use a flatbed for towing. If the vehicle must be moved onto a flatbed and will not shift to Neutral, load it with wheel dollies or a winch while still in Park.
