🚨 2023 Hyundai Nexo: Emergency Neutral
The 2023 Nexo uses an electronic push-button gear selector with P, R, N, D buttons located on the center console.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and chock all wheels securely
- Attempt to power on the vehicle by pressing the START button with the key fob present (the 12V battery may have enough charge for minimal electrical function)
- If the system powers on, press the brake pedal and push the N (Neutral) button
- If no electrical power is available, locate the shift lock override access—look for a small removable cap or cover near the base of the push-button shifter assembly on the center console
- Remove the override cover using a flathead screwdriver or trim tool
- Insert a small screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down while attempting to push the N button (this may require an assistant to apply 12V power temporarily to a jump point under the hood)
- If the high-voltage system is completely disabled and no electrical function is possible, the vehicle MUST be transported on a flatbed with all wheels off the ground

With zero electrical power
The Nexo's electronic shifter requires at least minimal 12V power to engage neutral. If the 12V battery is completely dead, attempt to jump-start the 12V system at the under-hood jump terminals (positive terminal under red cap in engine bay, negative ground point on chassis). Even brief 12V power may allow shifting to neutral. Without any power, mechanical override alone may not suffice.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
The Nexo is a hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle. NEVER tow with any wheels on the ground—the electric drive motor is directly connected to the front wheels and towing can cause severe damage to the motor and inverter. Always use a flatbed. The vehicle has no traditional transmission or true mechanical neutral for towing purposes. If you cannot get the vehicle into an electrically-enabled neutral state, it must be winched onto a flatbed with wheels not rotating.
