The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and parking brake is firmly engaged
- Turn the ignition to the ACC or ON position if battery has any charge (this may allow normal shifting)
- If no electrical power or shift lock won't release, locate the shift lock override slot
- The override access is typically a small rectangular slot or cap near the shifter base—on Palisade it's usually located on the left side of the shifter housing near the base
- Use a flathead screwdriver or the metal key from your key fob to remove any cover cap over the override slot
- Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pulling the shifter toward you out of Park
- Move the shifter to Neutral while holding the override down
- Keep the override depressed until the shifter is fully in Neutral position

With completely dead battery, you cannot start the engine but you can use the mechanical shift lock override to move to Neutral for towing.
