🚨 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid: Emergency Neutral
The 2021 Santa Fe Hybrid uses an electronic shift-by-wire console-mounted lever.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels.
- Turn the ignition to ON position (press START button twice without brake pedal if you have any 12V power).
- Locate the shift lock override access - there is a small rectangular cap on the left side of the shifter base, near where the shifter meets the center console.
- Use your ignition key blade or a small flathead screwdriver to carefully pry off the cap cover.
- Press firmly down into the override slot with the key or screwdriver while simultaneously moving the shift lever toward Neutral.
- If successful, the shifter will release from Park; hold the override down until the shifter is fully in Neutral position.
- For hybrids, once in Neutral, the vehicle can roll freely - ensure parking brake remains engaged until ready to load.

With zero electrical power
With completely dead 12V battery, the shift-by-wire system is locked. The override slot provides mechanical release, but some residual power in the system helps. If override does not work, jump-start the 12V battery briefly to energize the shift lock solenoid, use the override, shift to Neutral, then disconnect jump pack before moving the vehicle.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
HYBRID CRITICAL: Before towing, ensure the hybrid system is fully OFF (not in READY mode). For flatbed towing, all wheels can remain on the bed. For dolly towing, only front wheels up is acceptable - never tow with rear wheels on ground and front wheels rolling, as this can damage the hybrid transaxle and motor-generators. Distances over 50 miles or speeds over 30 mph require flatbed only.
