🚨 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe Plug-in Hybrid: Emergency Neutral

The 2023 Santa Fe PHEV uses a traditional center console shift lever with electronic shift lock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and parking brake is engaged (if functional).
  2. If the 12V battery has ANY charge, press the brake pedal and press the Start button twice WITHOUT pressing the brake to enter Accessory mode.
  3. Locate the shift lock override release: a small rectangular slot with a removable cap on the upper left side of the shifter base, near where the lever meets the console.
  4. Use a small flathead screwdriver, key, or similar tool to pry off the small plastic cap covering the override slot.
  5. Insert the tool straight down into the override slot and press down firmly.
  6. While pressing down on the override, press the brake pedal (if you have any electrical power) or simply pull the shifter toward you and move it to N (Neutral).
  7. The shifter should release and move to Neutral. You may need to maintain pressure on the override while shifting.
  8. Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be rolled or pushed short distances. For towing or longer moves, see evWarning below.

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the shift lock mechanism is spring-loaded and the mechanical override will work. However, you will NOT be able to shift out of Park if the transmission parking pawl is electronically controlled and requires power to disengage. In this case, you must jump-start the 12V battery (located under the hood) to at least Accessory mode. Once you have Accessory power, use the override procedure above. The instrument cluster will not show gear position without power, so shift carefully by feel.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: The Santa Fe PHEV has a plug-in hybrid drivetrain with electric motors connected to the transmission. If you need to tow this vehicle, FLATBED ONLY is the safest method. If the 12V battery is completely dead and cannot be jumped, the vehicle should NOT be towed with any wheels on the ground. Even in Neutral, the electric motors can generate voltage when wheels spin, potentially damaging the hybrid system. For short-distance rolling onto a flatbed (under 100 feet at walking speed), Neutral is acceptable. Do NOT flat-tow or dolly-tow this vehicle under any circumstances. Hybrid system damage from improper towing can exceed $15,000.
