🚨 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe: Emergency Neutral

The 2024 Santa Fe uses a console-mounted electronic automatic transmission shifter with integrated shift lock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Park vehicle on level ground and ensure parking brake is set
  2. Turn ignition to ON position if any battery power is available (may allow normal shift operation with brake depressed)
  3. If shift lock does not release, find the shift lock override access point
  4. Locate a small rectangular or circular cap on the center console near the shifter base—usually on the left or front-left side
  5. Carefully pry off the access cap using a small flathead screwdriver or trim removal tool
  6. Insert a screwdriver, key blade, or similar tool into the exposed override slot
  7. Press down firmly on the override mechanism while pulling the shifter from Park to Neutral
  8. Keep the override depressed until the shifter is completely in Neutral position
Shift-lock override location
Small cap-covered override slot on center console near the shifter base, typically left or front-left side of shifter; cap must be removed to access slot
With zero electrical power
With no electrical power, the mechanical shift lock override will function to release the shifter into Neutral. However, the electronic parking brake (standard on 2024 models) REQUIRES 12V power to release. You must provide temporary power via jump-start or jump box to disengage the EPB before the vehicle can roll. Without engine power, steering will be heavy and brakes will require much more pedal effort.
