🚨 2014 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid: Emergency Neutral
The 2014 Sonata Hybrid uses a conventional console-mounted P-R-N-D shifter with electronic shift-lock.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly set and the vehicle is on level ground or properly chocked.
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if possible (even with dead 12V battery, try turning the key).
- Firmly press and hold the brake pedal.
- Locate the shift-lock override slot: it is a small rectangular opening with a plastic cover cap on the left side of the shifter base, near the P position.
- Use a flathead screwdriver or similar tool to pry off the small cover cap.
- Insert the screwdriver or a key into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pulling the shifter out of Park toward Neutral.
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can roll freely; maintain brake pressure or have a second person control the vehicle.

With zero electrical power
With a completely dead 12V battery, the ignition will not power on and the shift-lock remains engaged. You MUST use the mechanical shift-lock override slot (remove cap, insert tool, press down) to release the shifter. The hybrid system will not engage, but the transmission will mechanically unlock for Neutral.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: The Sonata Hybrid has a hybrid drivetrain with a lithium-ion polymer battery. If the 12V system is dead, the high-voltage system will NOT engage. Do NOT attempt to tow with drive wheels on the ground under any circumstances. Use a flatbed or trailer with all four wheels off the ground. If using the shift-lock override for loading onto a flatbed, understand that power steering and power brakes will NOT function—plan for manual effort.
