🚨 2016 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid: Emergency Neutral
The 2016 Sonata Hybrid (7th generation facelift) uses a conventional console-mounted P-R-N-D electronic shifter with shift-lock.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly set and the vehicle is on level ground or properly chocked.
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if possible (even with dead 12V battery, try the START button without pressing the brake).
- Firmly press and hold the brake pedal.
- Locate the shift-lock override slot: on the left side of the shifter base, there is a small rectangular cover cap near the P position.
- Use a flathead screwdriver or trim tool to carefully pry off the cover cap.
- Insert the screwdriver or a key into the exposed override slot and press down firmly.
- While holding the override down, move the shifter from Park to Neutral.
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can roll; maintain brake pressure or have assistance controlling the vehicle.

If the 12V battery is completely dead, the push-button start will not activate any systems. The mechanical shift-lock override MUST be used (remove cover cap on shifter base, insert tool into slot, press down while shifting). The hybrid system will remain off, but the transmission will mechanically release to allow Neutral selection.

Power steering and brakes will not function without electrical power.
