🚨 2017 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid: Emergency Neutral
The 2017 Sonata Hybrid uses a console-mounted P-R-N-D electronic shifter lever with electronic shift-lock interlock.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly applied and the vehicle is on level ground or properly chocked.
- Attempt to turn the ignition to ACC or ON (press START button without brake pedal) if any 12V power remains.
- Firmly press and hold the brake pedal.
- Locate the shift-lock override: look for a small rectangular plastic cover on the left side of the shifter base, adjacent to the Park position.
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or trim removal tool to gently pry off the cover cap.
- Insert a screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot and push down firmly.
- While maintaining downward pressure on the override, shift the lever from Park to Neutral.
- Keep the vehicle controlled once in Neutral—it will roll freely.

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the push-button ignition will not activate and all electronic systems including the shift-lock remain engaged. Use the mechanical shift-lock override (remove cap, insert tool, press down firmly) to release the shifter into Neutral. The hybrid drivetrain will not activate, but the mechanical release allows the transmission to be placed in Neutral for rolling.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL HYBRID WARNING: The 2017 Sonata Hybrid uses a hybrid transmission system that requires the high-voltage system to be operational for safe movement. With a dead 12V battery, the hybrid system is completely disabled. DO NOT tow with any wheels on the ground under any circumstances—serious transmission damage will occur. Use a flatbed truck or trailer with all four wheels lifted. Power steering and power brakes will be inoperative without electrical power—plan accordingly when loading.
