🚨 2018 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid: Emergency Neutral
The 2018 Sonata Hybrid continues with a console-mounted P-R-N-D electronic shifter with shift-lock interlock system.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Apply the parking brake firmly and ensure the vehicle is on level ground or properly chocked.
- Attempt to activate the ignition to ACC mode (press the START button without pressing the brake) if any battery power is available.
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly.
- Locate the shift-lock override cover: it is a small rectangular plastic cap on the left side of the shifter base, near the Park gate.
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool to carefully pry off the plastic cover cap.
- Insert a screwdriver, key, or override tool into the exposed slot and press down firmly.
- While maintaining pressure on the override mechanism, move the shifter from Park to Neutral.
- Once in Neutral, maintain control of the vehicle as it can now roll freely.

With zero electrical power
If the 12V battery is completely dead, the electronic ignition will not function and the shift-lock remains electronically engaged. You must use the mechanical shift-lock override: remove the plastic cover on the shifter base, insert a tool into the slot, and press down firmly while shifting to Neutral. This mechanically bypasses the electronic lock. The hybrid system will not power up, but the transmission will release mechanically.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL HYBRID TOWING WARNING: The 2018 Sonata Hybrid has a hybrid drivetrain that absolutely requires a flatbed or trailer for towing. DO NOT tow with any wheels on the ground—the hybrid transmission is not designed for this and will be severely damaged. If moving the vehicle onto a flatbed with a dead battery, be aware that power steering and power brakes will NOT function. Use extra caution and manpower when loading.
