🚨 2019 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid: Emergency Neutral
The 2019 Sonata Hybrid (late 7th generation) uses a console-mounted P-R-N-D electronic shifter lever with electronic shift interlock.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly set and the vehicle is on level ground or properly chocked.
- If any 12V power is available, press the START button without the brake pedal to activate ACC mode.
- Press and hold the brake pedal.
- Locate the shift-lock override: there is a small rectangular plastic cover on the left side of the shifter base, near the Park position.
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or trim tool to carefully remove the plastic cover cap.
- Insert a screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly.
- While holding the override down, shift the lever from Park through to Neutral.
- Maintain control of the vehicle once in Neutral—it will roll freely.

With zero electrical power
With a completely dead 12V battery, the push-button start will not function and all electronic systems including shift-lock are disabled. Use the mechanical shift-lock override: pry off the small cover on the left side of the shifter base, insert a tool into the slot, press down firmly, and shift to Neutral. This mechanically releases the shifter. The hybrid powertrain will not activate, but the transmission will mechanically unlock.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL HYBRID TOWING RESTRICTION: The 2019 Sonata Hybrid must ONLY be transported on a flatbed or trailer with all four wheels off the ground. The hybrid transmission system will be catastrophically damaged if towed with wheels on the ground. With no 12V power, the high-voltage hybrid system is completely disabled. Power steering and power brakes will not function—use extreme caution and additional manpower when loading the vehicle onto a flatbed.
