🚨 2023 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid: Emergency Neutral

The 2023 Sonata Hybrid uses a conventional center console automatic shifter with a button-activated shift lock and electronic park mechanism.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and the parking brake is firmly engaged.
  2. Turn the ignition to the ACC or ON position if any 12V power is available (this may allow normal shifting).
  3. If the brake pedal feels stiff or the shifter won't move from Park, locate the shift lock override slot.
  4. The override access is typically found as a small rectangular or square cap near the base of the shifter assembly on the console, usually to the right or front-right of the shifter itself.
  5. Use a flathead screwdriver or similar tool to gently pry off the override cap.
  6. Insert a small flathead screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the exposed override slot and press down firmly.
  7. While holding the override down, press the shifter button and move the shifter to Neutral.
  8. Keep your foot on the brake pedal throughout this process if power is available.
  9. Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be moved or loaded.
Shift-lock override location
Small cap near the shifter base on the center console, typically to the right or front-right of the shifter; exact position may vary slightly by trim.
With zero electrical power
With a completely dead 12V battery, the electronic shifter and shift lock will not function normally. The shift lock override allows mechanical release to Neutral. The hybrid system will not be in a 'ready' state, but Neutral allows the wheels to roll freely for towing. You may need to access the 12V battery (in the trunk on most Sonata Hybrids) for a jump start if you need to move the vehicle under its own power.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
HYBRID VEHICLE WARNING: The Sonata Hybrid has a high-voltage battery system. Never attempt to tow with drive wheels on the ground for extended distances or at highway speeds. Even in Neutral, the electric motor may generate back-voltage if wheels spin. Use a flatbed or dolly under the front wheels. For very short distances at low speed (onto a flatbed), Neutral is acceptable. If the 12V system is dead, the hybrid system cannot enter 'ready' mode and the vehicle cannot propel itself.
