🚨 2026 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid: Emergency Neutral
The 2026 Sonata Hybrid uses an electronic push-button shift-by-wire system with P, R, N, D buttons arranged vertically on the center console.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and the parking brake is firmly engaged.
- If 12V power is available, turn the ignition to ON (press START button twice without brake pedal).
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly.
- Press the N (Neutral) button to shift into neutral.
- If the shift-by-wire system is completely non-responsive due to electrical failure, locate the mechanical shift lock override access hole in the center console near the shift buttons.
- Remove the small cover panel or cap adjacent to the shift button assembly (typically forward or to the right side of the button cluster).
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver or the key blade into the override slot.
- While pressing the override release, press the N button if power is available, or manually rotate/push the mechanical override mechanism if documented in your owner's manual.
- If the hybrid system will not power on at all, the vehicle must be placed on a flatbed with all wheels off the ground—do NOT tow with any wheels on the ground.
Shift-lock override location
Small access panel near the electronic shift button assembly on the center console; exact location may be just forward or to the right of the button cluster—consult owner's manual for precise cap location.
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the electronic shift buttons will not function. You must use the mechanical shift lock override access (small cover near buttons) and may need to manually manipulate an internal release mechanism. If this does not work or is not accessible, the vehicle must be winched onto a flatbed. The 12V battery is in the trunk; jump-starting may restore shift function.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
HYBRID CRITICAL: The Sonata Hybrid uses a dual-clutch transmission integrated with the hybrid system. If the high-voltage system is faulted or the 12V system is dead, DO NOT tow with any wheels on the ground. Flatbed or trailer transport with all four wheels off the ground is required to avoid severe transmission and electric motor damage. Even in neutral, the electric motor and transmission components can be damaged by flat-towing.
