The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and the parking brake is firmly engaged.
- If 12V power is available, turn the ignition to ON or ACC (press START button once or twice without brake pedal).
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly.
- Press the release button on the side of the shifter and move the lever to N (Neutral).
- If the shifter will not move due to a failed shift interlock or dead battery, locate the shift lock override release.
- Look for a small rectangular or circular cap on the console near the base of the shifter, typically to the right or forward of the shifter lever base.
- Pry off the cap carefully with a flathead screwdriver or your fingernail.
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver, key blade, or similar tool into the override slot.
- While pressing down on the override release mechanism, press the shifter button and move the shifter to N.
- If successful, you can now move the vehicle; if not, the vehicle must be winched onto a flatbed.

Small cap-covered slot on the center console near the base of the shifter lever, typically to the right side or just forward of the shifter base; remove cap to access override slot.
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the shifter interlock will be engaged and the shifter cannot be moved without using the manual shift lock override. Remove the small cap near the shifter base, insert a tool into the override slot, press down, and attempt to shift to neutral while pressing the shifter release button. If this fails, the vehicle must be loaded onto a flatbed. The 12V battery is under the hood; jump-starting will restore normal shift function.
