🚨 2016 Hyundai Sonata Plug-in Hybrid: Emergency Neutral

The 2016 Sonata Plug-in Hybrid uses a conventional console-mounted automatic transmission lever with a push-button on the front of the shifter knob for P-R-N-D operation.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and the parking brake is firmly engaged.
  2. Turn the ignition to the ON position (press START button twice without pressing the brake pedal, or turn key to ON if key-start equipped).
  3. Press and hold the brake pedal firmly.
  4. Press the button on the front of the shifter knob and move the lever to the N position.
  5. If the shifter will not move due to shift interlock failure, locate the shift lock release access hole with a small rectangular cover cap on the left side of the shifter base console trim.
  6. Use a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool to carefully pry off the plastic cover cap.
  7. Insert a screwdriver or key into the release slot and press down firmly.
  8. While holding the release down, press the shifter button and move the lever to N.
  9. The brake pedal must remain depressed during this procedure.

With zero electrical power
The LF Sonata platform uses a mechanical shift interlock that can be overridden manually even with a completely dead 12V battery. Use the shift lock release slot procedure above. However, the hybrid system and transmission control module still require 12V power to actually engage Neutral electronically. If the 12V battery is completely dead, the override may allow shifter movement but the transmission may not respond. Jump-start or connect a battery maintainer to provide minimal power for best results.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: This is a plug-in hybrid with a high-voltage battery system. If the 12V battery is dead, the hybrid system will not enter a safe tow mode. Before towing, ensure the vehicle is in N and that you are using a flatbed or trailer. DO NOT tow with drive wheels on the ground for any significant distance, as the electric motor/transmission may not be properly disengaged and severe damage can occur. The hybrid system must have 12V power to properly disconnect the electric drive components. If the 12V battery cannot be jumped or charged, flatbed towing is mandatory.
