⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and apply the parking brake firmly.
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if possible (if battery has enough charge for accessories).
- Locate the shift-lock override slot: it is a small rectangular opening covered by a plastic cap, located on the left side of the shifter base near the driver's side.
- Use a flathead screwdriver or similar tool to carefully pry off the plastic cap covering the override slot.
- Insert the screwdriver or a key into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pulling the shifter button and moving the shifter out of Park.
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be moved. Release the parking brake only when ready to move.

With zero electrical power
If the 12V battery is completely dead, the ignition will not turn on. You must use the shift-lock override method (steps 3-5) without ignition power. The override is purely mechanical and does not require electrical power to function.

PHEV WARNING: The Sonata Plug-in Hybrid has electric drive capability. If the high-voltage system is active, the vehicle may attempt to move when shifted into gear even with the engine off. Ensure the vehicle is fully powered down (READY light off) before attempting to shift. For flatbed towing, place in Neutral and ensure the parking brake is released only when secured to the flatbed. Do NOT tow with driven wheels on the ground for extended distances.
