⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake firmly.
- Turn the ignition key to the ON (ACC or RUN) position; if the battery is completely dead, see 'noPowerNotes' below.
- Locate the shift lock release slot: it is a small covered opening on the shifter console, typically to the left or directly in front of the shifter base.
- Use a flathead screwdriver or similar tool to pry off the small plastic cap covering the shift lock release slot.
- Insert a screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the shift lock release slot and press down firmly.
- While holding down the override tool, press the brake pedal (if you have any power) or simply move the shifter out of Park into Neutral.
- Release the override tool once Neutral is engaged; verify the shifter is in N.
Shift-lock override location
Small covered slot on the shifter console, typically to the left side or directly forward of the shifter base. The cap is usually a small rectangular or circular piece of trim.
With zero electrical power
If the 12V battery is completely dead and you cannot turn the ignition to ON, the shift lock will not disengage electronically. You MUST use the mechanical shift lock override: remove the cover and insert the tool as described. The override is purely mechanical and does not require electrical power. Press the tool down firmly and move the shifter to Neutral. If the steering column is locked, you may need to jump-start the 12V battery to unlock the steering before the vehicle can roll freely.
