🚨 2016 Hyundai Sonata: Emergency Neutral

The 2016 Sonata uses a conventional floor-mounted console shifter with a P-R-N-D gate and an integrated shift lock mechanism (same generation as 2015).

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake firmly.
  2. Turn the ignition key or push the start button to the ON (ACC or RUN) position; if the battery is completely dead, see 'noPowerNotes' below.
  3. Locate the shift lock release slot: a small rectangular or circular cap on the shifter console, typically to the left or just forward of the shifter lever base.
  4. Use a flathead screwdriver or similar tool to carefully pry off the shift lock release cap.
  5. Insert the tool into the shift lock release slot and press down firmly.
  6. While holding the override tool down, press the brake pedal (if power is available) or simply move the shifter from Park to Neutral.
  7. Release the tool and verify the transmission is in Neutral; the vehicle should now roll freely (with brake released).
Shift-lock override location
Small cap on the shifter console, typically to the left side or forward of the shifter base. Look for a small rectangular or circular trim piece that can be pried off with a screwdriver.
With zero electrical power
If the 12V battery is completely dead and the ignition cannot be turned on, use the mechanical shift lock override. The override is mechanical and does not require electrical power—simply remove the cap, insert the tool, press down, and shift to Neutral. Note: the steering column may remain locked without power, which could prevent the vehicle from rolling. If the steering is locked, you must jump-start the 12V battery to unlock it, or flatbed tow the vehicle.
