🚨 2017 Hyundai Sonata: Emergency Neutral
The 2017 Sonata (LF generation facelift) uses a traditional console-mounted electronic shift lever with a button on the side for Park release.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake fully.
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining (this may allow normal shifting).
- If the shifter will not move out of Park, locate the shift lock override slot—it is a small rectangular slot with a plastic cap cover located on the left side of the shifter base, near the driver's side.
- Use a flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to carefully pry off the cap cover.
- Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and push down firmly while simultaneously pressing the brake pedal (if possible) and pressing the shifter button.
- While holding the override down, move the shifter to Neutral.
- If the override does not engage, ensure you are pushing straight down with adequate force—the mechanical release requires firm pressure.
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be pushed or winched onto a flatbed.

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the electronic shifter lock may still be engaged. The mechanical shift lock override will work without power—use the override slot and apply firm downward pressure. You do not need ignition power to use the override mechanism itself, but the shifter gate may feel stiff.
