🚨 1997 Hyundai Tiburon: Emergency Neutral

The 1997 Tiburon uses a traditional console-mounted automatic shifter with a mechanical shift-lock system that may be cable-operated from the brake pedal.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and apply the parking brake firmly.
  2. Turn the ignition key to ACC or ON position if possible.
  3. Locate the shift-lock override release: look for a small covered slot or button near the shifter base, typically on the left side or in front of the shifter.
  4. Remove the cover or cap if present using a flathead screwdriver.
  5. Insert a screwdriver, pen, or the ignition key into the override slot and press down while simultaneously pressing the shifter button and moving the shifter to Neutral.
  6. If no override slot is visible, check under any trim panel immediately surrounding the shifter base—there may be a small access point.
  7. Once in Neutral, release the parking brake only when ready to move the vehicle.
Shift-lock override location
Typically on the left side or front of the shifter base, covered by a small cap; exact location may require inspection of the shifter surround
With zero electrical power
The 1997 Tiburon's shift-lock may be partially mechanical. If the battery is completely dead and ignition cannot be turned on, the mechanical override (steps 3-5) should still function. In some cases, the shift lock may be cable-actuated and less dependent on electrical power.
