🚨 1997 Hyundai Tiburon: Emergency Neutral
The 1997 Tiburon uses a traditional console-mounted automatic shifter with a mechanical shift-lock system that may be cable-operated from the brake pedal.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and apply the parking brake firmly.
- Turn the ignition key to ACC or ON position if possible.
- Locate the shift-lock override release: look for a small covered slot or button near the shifter base, typically on the left side or in front of the shifter.
- Remove the cover or cap if present using a flathead screwdriver.
- Insert a screwdriver, pen, or the ignition key into the override slot and press down while simultaneously pressing the shifter button and moving the shifter to Neutral.
- If no override slot is visible, check under any trim panel immediately surrounding the shifter base—there may be a small access point.
- Once in Neutral, release the parking brake only when ready to move the vehicle.
Shift-lock override location
Typically on the left side or front of the shifter base, covered by a small cap; exact location may require inspection of the shifter surround
With zero electrical power
The 1997 Tiburon's shift-lock may be partially mechanical. If the battery is completely dead and ignition cannot be turned on, the mechanical override (steps 3-5) should still function. In some cases, the shift lock may be cable-actuated and less dependent on electrical power.
